From the Desk Of

Dear Sisters,

The Fraternity and Sorority Political Action Committee (FSPAC) is entering its ninth year of existence and its fifth election cycle in 2013-14. It is one of the most successful examples of interfraternal cooperation in recent memory. It has been my pleasure to represent Sigma Kappa on the FSPAC Board of Directors for the past several years. In this short period of time, it has become the nation’s largest political action committee dedicated to higher education issues and student rights.

One of the main events that the FSPAC sponsors is the annual Hill Visits. Representatives from sororities and fraternities from around the country descend on Washington, D.C. in April for a day of lobbying our legislators regarding issues important to us. This year, NPC Delegate Donna Crain King, Epsilon Rho, Eastern Washington University; Ava jahanvash, Theta Beta, University of LaVerne; Paige Oxendine, Delta Upsilon, Missouri State University; and myself represented Sigma Kappa on the Hill to lobby with other Greek leaders.

Our efforts at FSPAC give fraternity and sorority leaders an important megaphone to amplify their message about the impact our organizations have on our communities and campuses. In the next two years, Congress will be considering the following issues of relevance to our members:

• Comprehensive tax reform that could eliminate or scale back the value of charitable deductions and could include passage of the Collegiate Housing and Infrastructure Act;

• The potential federalization of hazing laws with restrictions on federal student aid;

• Reauthorization of the Higher Education Act, which includes provisions related to freedom of association rights for our organizations; and

• Legislative efforts to lower the standards of proof and historical due process rights for students involved in campus judicial proceedings.

Over the years, I have gained many friends in the interfraternal world by working with them to advance our issues. It is my hope that Sigma Kappa will continue to support the FSPAC and our lobby efforts to make sure that our voice is heard in Washington. Like most endeavors in the fraternity/sorority world, our success is because of the visible backing of so many national fraternity and sorority leaders. I am proud to be among them.

In Sigma Kappa,
Cheri Morrell De Jong, Epsilon Omega
National President
president@sigmakappa.org
