Sorority Women Achieve Higher Educational Outcomes BY SHAUNA PRENTICE, MEMBER DEVELOPMENT AND EDUCATION MANAGER Kappa Deltas across the country excel academically year after year, and it isn't a coincidence. Participation in sorority life actually leads to higher educational outcomes for collegiate women. According to a national study conducted by J. Patrick Biddix, Ph.D., associate professor of higher education and coordinator of the College Student Personnel Program at the University of Tennessee/ Knoxville, sorority women are three times more likely to be retained from freshman to sophomore year than non-sorority members and twice as likely to graduate in four years. These numbers affirm what we know: Kappa Delta offers the tools and the support our women need to achieve academically and prepare for success in their future careers. For the spring 2017 semester, 117 chapters were above a 3.0 GPA with 119 chapters reporting. Of these, 91 chapters were above the all-women's average, while 73 chapters were above both the all-women's average and the all-sorority average. Twenty-one chapters ranked first in GPA among National Panhellenic Conference groups on their campuses. Seventy-four chapters increased their GPA from the fall 2016 semester to the spring 2017 semester, and of these, 21 increased their GPA .10 or more.
