My Foundation Story

Rachel Shouse, Foundation Stewardship Coordinator 2017-04-13 01:50:35

To her Kappa Delta sisters, Monteigne Mathison is known as a KD superstar, serving as a collegiate advisor, being active in her alumnae chapter, earning KD accolades and supporting the foundation. Monteigne also is known as a devoted wife, mother, grandmother and gifted artist. Monteigne discovered a passion for creating at a young age while taking art lessons. She discovered a great love for the process of creating on paper and canvas. " I cannot remember a time when I was not involved in some type of creative process," Monteigne says. After marrying George Mathison, a minister, Monteigne went back to school to obtain her master's degree so she could begin a career in art education that would span 31 years in two states. When asked how she inspires and builds confidence in her students, Monteigne says: "Creating is a process. It comes naturally until a person begins to 'self-evaluate' what they have created. The goal is to focus on building confidence in the process and to let the product speak for itself. If you know how to use the [art] tools, then confidence in the process enables students to be successful." As a collegian, Monteigne honed her art skills with various projects and in service as philanthropy chairman. Holding leadership positions in KD built confidence that Monteigne has carried over into her professional and volunteer roles. "Volunteering with KD on the local level is a privilege," she says. " It provides an opportunity to be in touch with the young women as they launch from home to college and from college to career." Her support of the Kappa Delta Foundation is inspired by the educational and leadership opportunities provided to women through the foundation. Monteigne takes great pride in being able to give back to KD in both time and treasure. "The greatness of KD is not one person's gift, one person's service or one person's leadership," she says. " It is the combination of our gifts, service and leadership that continue to build the strength of Kappa Delta today and for the future."
